May 8 Devotional

When I was a little boy, I was taught a simple prayer before going to sleep at night.  The first line of that prayer was; “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep …”  What a joy to move from learning a prayer to be repeated before going to sleep, to becoming a child of the God who knows the Father personally!  I don’t think we realize the great privilege we have to actually speak to the Creator of the universe when we have a problem.  I don’t even think we can fathom the depth of the power at His command.  We have the God Who spoke life into this world.  We serve the God with Whom nothing is impossible!  One of the greatest challenges for our God must have been to provide a way of forgiveness for sinful mankind without violating His own justice and perfection.  Men have debated for as long as we have been alive, as to the way to have that happen.  There are twenty-two different religions listed on the internet today that each claim to have the way to Heaven/Nirvana, or whatever they call it.  The reality is that there is only one God!  That God determines the way to Heaven … it is not up for debate or discussion.  I want to know this God!  I want to be the child of this God!  I want to trust Him to take care of the things that are outside my ability to handle.

The psalmist wrote, “I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and He heard me out of His holy hill. Selah.  I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me” (Psalm 3:4-5).  When God is your Shepherd, there is no fear of evil because you know that He can handle anything that is coming your way.  As these verses say, this is possible because “the LORD sustained me.”  We live in a world that seems to be filled with fear and anxiety.  “The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates 5% of adolescents suffer from major depression … Gallup’s survey shows 9% of teens say they have been prescribed medication for depression at some point” (Information from: http://www.gallup.com/).  What we need today is not more drugs, or more programs, but we need children to be taught, and teens to be encouraged to turn to the God Who allows you to lay your head on your pillow at night without fear!  He is the One Who is able to sustain you in these troubled times.  If you know Him, take the time today to tell someone who doesn’t know Him about Him.  They might be in line in the drugstore right now!  Jesus is the answer for the problems of this world today.  Tell someone about Him.
