March 28 Devotional

It was a summer afternoon in the empty lot next to our neighbor’s house.  My “friends” and I were playing baseball, and I was up to bat.  I hit a screaming line drive toward our neighbor’s house.  While I watched in horror as the ball crashed right through their kitchen window, I turned to see all of my friends running for home … leaving me standing at home-plate holding the bat in my hand. Every person reading this today has had someone tell them that they were their friend, only to see them running away when a tough situation arose.  Do you have a friend who will stay with you during the tough times?

When Jesus was here on the earth, He chose twelve men to be His closest followers we call, disciples.  When Jesus came to the most crucial time in His life, one of these disciples turned their back on Him in the worst way.  There has always been an interesting thing that took place during the betrayal of Jesus.  When Judas approached Jesus, here is what happened … “And forthwith he [Judas Iscariot] came to Jesus, and said, ‘Hail, master;’ and kissed Him.  And Jesus said unto him, ‘Friend, wherefore art thou come?’” (Matthew 26:49-50).

This makes me think of an old hymn entitled, “What a Friend We Have In Jesus.”  Could there be a more faithful friend to a sinner than Jesus Christ?  Could there be anyone who could love you more faithfully and with more force than Jesus?  Even when Jesus knew that Judas Iscariot was coming to betray Him … to send Him to the cross … to cause Him physical, and emotional anguish; He still called him “Friend.”  The actual reality was that Jesus was dying as much for the sin of Judas Iscariot as for anyone else’s sin!  What an incredible love that drove Him!  What an incredible Savior!  What an amazing Friend you have if you know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior!

The absolutely clear truth is that Jesus Christ is a friend to you … the real question to be answered is, are you a friend to Him?  Will you turn and run to hide when challenges to Him arise?  Will we deny that we know Him when others are clamoring so loudly that He does not exist?  Will we tell our family, friends and neighbors that there is only ONE             Way, Truth and Life?  Stand for Jesus Christ today; He is standing for you at the right hand of God in Heaven!

I have called you friends, who can you call a friend?” – John 15:15 – Dr. Ted Camp
