March 22 Devotional

When I am in the woods in the fall months, I am looking for something very specific.  I want to see the antlers of a nice deer.  Many times after seeing the body of a deer in the distance, I have picked up my binoculars to see if I can see those treasured antlers on his head.  There have been times that I have strained my eyes looking for that very specific thing on a magnificent deer.  I find that I have great patience and persistence while looking to see that thing I am hoping to find.  I will move to different positions, I will wait, and wait, and wait some more in order to get a better look.

This morning I read a verse that reminded me of this kind of effort, but in pursuit of a different treasure.  The psalmist wrote; “The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure in them” (Psalm 111:2).  There is no question that the works of the Lord are great!  There are so many wonderful things that God has done and is doing all around us.  The old hymn encouraged us to count our blessings … name them one by one.  This is a good practice for us to do.  Take some time today to look at the things God has done for you in your life.  Take some time to thank God for having an active role in your life.  Don’t spend so much time looking at the bad things that have happened to you that you miss all the blessings.  This verse simply states that God has done wonderful things.

The second part of the verse encourages us to look for those things.  We are told to search for those things as if they were treasure to be found.  We are living in a time in history when we have almost suffered information overload.  We have so many ways to get more and more information.  With just a few clicks of a computer mouse, we can access encyclopedias and all kinds of resource materials.  In the same way we ought to spend a great deal of time seeking for the things that God has done, not only for us, but for those mentioned in our Bible.  We ought to actively pursue everything we can in order to know our God better.

The promise here is that if we will actively search for the things God has done, that we will find great pleasure in them.  There is nothing like reveling in the goodness of our God!  He is so incredible that the review of what He has done for us should cause great joy to come to our hearts every time we think about it.  When things start becoming discouraging … think about all God has done for you and praise Him.  It will do you good!  Keep your spiritual binoculars ready at all times!

It is a terrible thing to see and have no vision.” – Helen Keller
