June 10 Devotional

We hear a great deal of talk today about freedom.  Freedom is not something a government can give you.  A government can limit your physical freedom, but cannot touch the freedom God wants to give you.  Jesus gave the absolute essential for freedom: “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him, ‘If ye continue in My Word, then ye are My disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free’” (John 8:31-32).  I want you to notice something very important today.  Freedom is not an external gift that someone else can give.  True freedom comes from getting into the Word of God, and then in allowing the Word of God to get into you!

Don’t be fooled by those around you who tell you that you can experience freedom if you find a way to have all your bills paid.  I have known some very miserable rich people, and I have known some joyful rich people.  Money does not bring the freedom you are looking for.  Don’t allow some politician to tell you that they can bring you freedom and contentment through some law they will put into act.  Freedom is not man-made, it is God-given.  When the nations of the world have turned their back on God, is it any wonder that there is unrest?  It is the natural by-product of ignoring the Word of God!

The key to experiencing true freedom comes when we do what this verse clearly states … “If ye continue in My Word … ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”  That is freedom that money, or fame, or this world cannot ever give you.  This is a freedom that comes from the inside and works its way to the outside.  This is freedom that is totally dependent upon God and His promises, and only dependent on you for how much you will trust and obey His Word.  We need to learn an important lesson.  The things that are really important in life; love, joy, peace, contentment, security, freedom … all come from God and cannot be self-generated!  Why is it that we see so many people committing suicide today?  Part of the reason is that we have removed God from the picture when we are searching for love, joy, peace, contentment, security, freedom, etc.  We have tried to find some magic formula that will produce the things that only God can give.  Rather than searching all over the world for these things today, why not simply trust God to give you the things you want the most, or change the things you want as you read the Scripture?
